Authors: W.J.M. Sleurs, H.L. Strack
Basteria, 85 (1): 34-58

Abstract

This paper reviews the Rissoinidae and Zebinidae collected during the Rumphius Biohistorical Expedition to Ambon, in 1990, with additional material collected by the second author (hls). In all, 30 species belonging to the family Rissoinidae and 12 species belonging to the family Zebinidae are recognised. The wellknown species are listed with a short synonymy and the poorly known species are redescribed in detail and illustrated. The biogeographical relationships of the rissoinid and zebinid fauna from Ambon are briefly discussed.

Basteria, 85 (1): 59-72

Abstract

Repeated scuba diving visits to Saba, Caribbean Netherlands, from 2011 to 2020 allowed us to add 51 species of marine molluscs to the island’s species checklist, in an attempt to get closer to having a full list of all the species that live around the island. Th e new records include 40 gastropods (over half of which are sea slugs), seven bivalves, one scaphopod and three cephalopods. The records of the following species represent large increments in their geographic distributions: Anetarca piutaensis (Ortea, Caballer & Espinosa, 2003), Coryphellina hamanni (Gosliner, 1994), Cyphoma cassidyae Lorenz, 2020, Tenellia cf. luciae (Valdés, Medrano & Bhave, 2016), Elysia cornigera Nuttall, 1990, Felimare acriba (Ev. Marcus & Er. Marcus, 1967), Lomanotus phiops Er. Marcus, 1957, Okenia picoensis Paz-Sedano, Ortigosa & Pola, 2017, Polycera sp. 2 sensu Valdés et al. (2006), Thuridilla malaquita Ortea & Buske, 2014. The introduced nudibranch Doriprismatica sedna (Ev. Marcus & Er. Marcus, 1967) was also recorded; its presence on Saba in 2014 (and on St. Eustatius in 2015) is indicative of a rapid expansion in the Caribbean. All records are backed by photographs which were taken, in situ, by T.M. Zahner, and which have been uploaded to the online platform iNaturalist. This has the advantage of simultaneously making the information available to researchers and to the broader public.

The families Streptaxidae and Diapheridae (Gastropoda, Pulmonata) in Bhutan, with notes on some species occurring in Nepal and North-east India

Authors: E. Gittenberger, P. Leda, S. Sherub, C. Gyeltshen
Basteria, 85 (1): 73-81

Abstract

The sister-families Streptaxidae and Diapheridae are reported from eastern Bhutan, with two and four species, respectively. The occurrence of the streptaxid Perrottetia theobaldi marks the northwestern limit of the genus Perrottetia. Gulella (Huttonella) bicolor is a widespread invasive species that might have its native range in Asia. Two of the four Sinoennea species that are reported from Bhutan, viz. Sinoennea bhucylindrica Gittenberger & Leda and Sinoennea nimai Gittenberger & Gyeltshen, are regarded as new to science. Perrottetia theobaldi, Sinoennea vara and maybe S. latens support the biogeographical link across the Brahmaputra between eastern Bhutan and the Khasi Hills in the Meghalaya state of India. Notes on three Sinoennea species occurring in the eastern Himalayan foothills, but not known from Bhutan, are added.

Basteria, 84 (4/6): 141-145

Abstract

An Iberian semi-slug, Drusia valenciennii (Webb & Van Beneden, 1836), was found in 2019 in the Netherlands. When this introduced species was first encountered, only photographs were taken, but a few juveniles were later collected; their raising to maturity is described. One mature specimen was dissected to examine the genitalia and confirm the identification. This is the first record of a Drusia species in northwestern Europe.

Chicoreus (Triplex) kahlbrocki spec.nov. (Neogastropoda: Muricidae) from the Sudan with comments on related congeners

Authors: R. Houart, F. Lorenz
Basteria, 84 (4/6): 164-169

Abstract

A new species of Chicoreus (Triplex) is described from the Sudan in the Red Sea. It is compared with three closely related, allopatric species from the Red Sea: C. (T.) corrugatus (G.B. Sowerby ii, 1841); C. (T.) ethiopius Vokes, 1978; and C. (T.) teva Houart & Lorenz, 2016, as well as with C. (T.) strigatus (Reeve, 1849) and C. (T.) paini Houart, 1983 from the Indo-West Pacific. Chicoreus (Triplex) corrugatus ethiopius is here given the status of a valid species.

Abstract

Collections in 2007 of 634 stations at 21 sites in northern Madagascar yielded 35 species and subspecies of rhytidoid land snails: Ampelita akoratsara akoratsara Emberton, 1999, A. akoratsara paulayi subspec. nov., A. analamerae Emberton, 1999, A. andavakoerae spec. nov., A. anjajaviensis spec. nov., A. atropos (Deshayes, 1850), A. capdambrae spec. nov., A. celestinae spec. nov., A. clotho (Deshayes, 1850), A. consanguinea (Deshayes, 1850), A. ela spec. nov., A. gaudens (Mabille, 1884), A. granulosa (Deshayes, 1850), A. kendrae spec. nov., A. kirae spec. nov., A. lachesis (Deshayes, 1850), A. lamarei lamarei (L. Pfeiffer, 1846), A. lamarei sakalava (Angas, 1878), A. lincolni spec. nov., A. masoalae Emberton, 1999, A. michellae spec. nov., A. miovaova spec. nov., A. niarae spec. nov., A. stilpna (Mabille, 1884), A. thompsoni spec. nov., Eurystyla ambatoensis (Emberton & Griffiths, 2009), E. julii julii (Fischer-Piette & Garreau, 1965), E. julii kely subspec. nov., E. julii soa (Emberton & Griffith, 2009), Paraclavator moreleti (Deshayes, 1851), Embertoniphanta amphibulima (L. Pfeiffer, 1847), E. echinophora (Deshayes, 1850), E. oviformis (Grateloup, 1840), E. josephinae spec. nov., and E. socii (Fischer-Piette, F. Blanc & Salvat, 1975).

Live adults of 17, and tissue samples of 22, of these 35 taxa were collected. The new species bring Madagascar’s total described rhytidoid species to 135. More await discovery, both within Madagascar’s forests and within extensive, unidentified collections from 1995-1996.

Discoveries include: (a) the hairy-shelled Embertoniphanta echinophora has a broad rainforest distribution and has an isolated, deciduous-forest, sister species, E. josephinae spec. nov.; (b) the gigantic (shell height 91.7 mm), micro-endemic Embertoniphanta socii is effectively absent from northern Ankarana; (c) the Eurystyla radiation is much more extensive than previously imagined; (d) southern Namoroka Reserve is not the home of its namesake Ampelita namerokoensis Fischer-Piette, 1952 (described from Bemaraha, far to the south!), but of A. thompsoni spec. nov.; (e) A. miovaova spec. nov., as proposed, is one of the most conchologically variable species of land snails; (f) A. lincolni spec. nov. is now the largest known Ampelita (73.5 mm diameter).

Dr. ir. Jacobus Johannes (John) van Aartsen (1936-2020): a life for malacology

Authors: J. Goud, H.P.M.G. Menkhorst
Basteria, 84 (4/6): 265-281

Abstract

Since 1958 John van Aartsen had a keen interest in molluscs of the Mediterranean, and particularly the differences in malacofauna of the western and eastern parts of that basin. He focussed on Rissoidae, Pyramidellidae and bivalves; published 139 malacological papers and described 105, particularly minute-sized, species. Together with his wife Jozina, many trips were devoted to the collection of samples potentially containing small shell species. His collection with an odd 33,000 samples has been included in that of Naturalis Biodiversity Center (Leiden).

Additions and corrections to the Gastropod fauna of the Pliocene of Estepona, southwestern Spain

Authors: B.M. Landau, H. Mulder
Basteria, 84 (1/3): 26-57

Abstract

In this paper we update the systematic taxonomy of papers published by our team between 2000-2009 dealing with the Pliocene of Estepona. Four species are described as new, Rimula lobilloensis spec. nov., Macromphalina alinemulderae spec. nov., Euthriofusus postumus spec. nov., and Andonia wilhelminamariae spec. nov., of which the last also occurs in the Pliocene of Italy. Several new subjective synonyms are identified: Cymbium gracile lusitanica Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is junior subjective synonym of Cymbium ibericum Landau & Marquet, 2000. Bolma malakensis Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is a junior subjective synonym of Bolma castrocarensis (Foresti, 1876). Tribia pliogeometrica Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is a junior subjective synonym of Tribia hispanica Brunetti, Forli & Vecchi, 2006. Scaphella (Aurinia) josei Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is junior subjective synonym of Euroscaphella carlae (Landau & Silva, 2006). Pisania plioalboranensis Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is junior subjective synonym of Pisania plioangustata (Sacco, 1904). Columbella sphaerica Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is a secondary homonym of C. sublachryma var. sphaerica Hervier, 1900, and here considered a junior subjective synonym of Columbella castoris Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006. Pisania baetica Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is a junior subjective synonym of Pisania magna (Foresti, 1868). Bullia eloisae Lozano-Francisco & Vera-Peláez, 2006 is a junior subjective synonym of Tritia oblonga (Sassi, 1827). Nassa andonae Bellardi, 1882 is taken out of synonymy with N. producta Bellardi, 1882.

Sinum haliotoideum (Linnaeus, 1758): historic and modern records from the Red Sea, with a discussion of its convoluted taxonomic history (Gastropoda, Naticidae)

Authors: L.J. van Gemert, T. Huelsken, M.L. Rusmore-Villaume, M. Hollmann
Basteria, 83 (1/3): 3-12

Abstract

Specimens of Sinum haliotoideum (Linnaeus, 1758) were recently collected in the Red Sea area, confirming an old report from the mid-1800s. The occurrence in the Red Sea is supported by records, both earlier and recent, from neighbouring localities in the northern Indian Ocean. Thus, the northern Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, has to be included in the geographical range of this species. Differences in opinion concerning conspecificity of Sinum haliotoideum with other species of Sinum described from the Indo-Pacific are discussed. S. planulatum (Récluz in Chenu, 1843) = S. planatum (Récluz in Chenu, 1843), S. planum (Philippi, 1844), S. gualterianum (Récluz, 1851), and S. weberi (Bartsch, 1918) are all junior synonyms of S. haliotoideum (Linnaeus, 1758). S. fuscum (Röding, 1798), S. sinuatum (Récluz, 1851), S. lacteum (Récluz, 1851), Ectosinum pauloconvexum Iredale, 1931, and S. diauges Kilburn, 1974 are distinct from S. haliotoideum. The status of S. indicum (Gray, 1828) remains uncertain as the type material is probably lost.

The malacological publications of Jules-René Bourguignat: a bibliography

Authors: R.A. Bank, G. Falkner, M. Falkner, E. Neubert
Basteria, 83 (1/3): 59-90

Abstract

An overview is given of the malacological papers published by the Frenchman Jules-René Bourguignat (29.viii.1829 – 3.iv.1892). Because of the Principle of Priority, special attention is given to publication dates, as Bourguignat introduced > 2500 taxa in the ‘Golden Age’, a period in malacology in which many new species were discovered. Five portraits of Bourguignat are reproduced, and reproductions are provided of the rare plates 13-15 of the 1880 fascicule of his Matériaux sur les Acéphales. Publication dates are given for the three journals published by the Société Malacologique de France.
