Authors: J.G.M. Raven, S.J. van Leeuwen
Basteria, 87 (2): 113-115

Abstract

During 2021 ‘Stichting Duik de Noordzee Schoon’ (DDNZS Foundation, or Dive to Clean the North Sea) organised two campaigns of dive teams recovering fishing nets and other materials from wrecks in the North Sea. From a sample of seabed sediment next to the wreck of SS Ara, north of Schiermonnikoog, the Netherlands, a single shell of Philinissima denticulata (J. Adams, 1800) was recovered. This is the first record for the Netherlands, but it is expected to have a wider distribution in the area.

On some haired land snails from Northern Africa

Authors: I. Abbes, I.K. Ezzine, E. Neubert
Basteria, 87 (2): 130-137

Abstract

For the first time, the genus Schileykiella is recorded from Northern Africa. One species, Schileykiella sordulenta (Morelet, 1851), was found to be widely distributed in the area (Northern Algeria, Northwestern Libya, Tunisia); four other nominal taxa could be identified as synonyms of this species. Two other taxa, Helix alsia Bourguignat, 1863 and Helix lasia Bourguignat, 1863 have been tentatively identified as possible congeneric species; both are known from Northern Algeria.

New data on holoplanktonic gastropods from NW Spain

Authors: J.G.M. Raven, A.A. Suárez
Basteria, 87 (2): 140-147

Abstract

This paper presents an overview of all holoplanktonic gastropods thus far known from NW Spain. Shells of such molluscs are rarely beached. However, holoplanktonic gastropods may live close to the coast in embayments adjoining deeper water, and shells of several species have been found on beaches along such bays. Seven species are newly recorded from the Cantabrian Sea, one is new for NW Spain. In addition, new records from the Galicia Bank west of the Iberian Peninsula and records from Hendaye, just north of the Spanish-French border, are included.

The slug mite Riccardoella oudemansi found on endemic gastropods on the Canary Islands

Authors: C.J.P.J. Margry, W.R.B. Heitmans
Basteria, 87 (2): 162-168

Abstract

We confirm the presence of the widespread hematophageous slug mite Riccardoella oudemansi new to the Canary Islands. The slug mite was discovered on two endemic gastropods: the semi-slug Insulivitrina solemi on La Palma and the true glass snail Retinella hierroensis on El Hierro. Evidence is provided that the mite can reproduce on both hosts. In addition, the mite was found on Deroceras reticulatum and Limacus flavus, two slugs introduced to the Canary Islands.

Hidden diversity in cockles: six new Indo-Pacific species and a new subfamily with notes on the Vasticardium elongatum species group (Bivalvia: Cardiidae)

Author: J.J. ter Poorten
Basteria, 87 (2): 169-205

Abstract

Six new Indo-Pacific Cardiidae species are described originating from various institutional collections, supplemented with material from private collections, mostly based on shell characters and partly augmented by genetic information: Microcardium lukasi spec. nov., Microcardium roelofi spec. nov., Ctenocardia lisae spec. nov., Acrosterigma zamboangaense spec. nov., Vasticardium jorgeni spec. nov. and Vasticardium albopacificum spec. nov. A new subfamily Nemocardiinae subfam. nov. is proposed for the genera Nemocardium Meek, 1876; Pratulum Iredale, 1924; Keenaea Habe, 1951; Lophocardium P. Fischer, 1887; Frigidocardium Habe, 1951 and Microcardium Keen, 1937. In addition it comprises the extinct genera Anechinocardium Hickman, 2015 and Arctopratulum Keen, 1954. Some notes are given on the composition and geographic distribution of the Vasticardium elongatum group of species. Acrosterigma elongatum cipangense J. Vidal, 1993 is considered a junior synonym of Trachycardium (Acrosterigma) serricostatum okinawaense Kuroda, 1960 and Vasticardium kuboderai Thach, 2015 a junior synonym of Vasticardium berschaueri Thach, 2014.

“Museum Boltenianum … pars secunda” by P.F. Röding (1798): an update on authorship and the printings, with an appendix listing additional Mollusca from the Bolten collection

Authors: G.C. Kronenberg, U. Wieneke
Basteria, 87 (2): 213-224

Abstract

The history, authorship, and printings of the “Museum Boltenianum … pars secunda” are discussed. It is confirmed that P. F. Röding alone was responsible for the 1798 edition. Anton August Heinrich Lichtenstein only wrote an introduction to the catalogue and, in all probability, had no role in creating the names, which was, in all probability, only done by Joachim Friedrich Bolten, the owner of the shell collection. The role of Johann Dominikus Schulze, if any, in creating the names in this catalogue remains unclear. There are two different printings of the “Museum Boltenianum … pars secunda,” both in 1798. In addition, the 1819 Noodt edition of “Museum Boltenianum … pars secunda” has some differences with the 1798 edition, as indicated by Petit (2013), including but not limited to the spelling of some names introduced in 1798. Both the “Museum Boltenianum … pars prima” and the 1819 edition contain Mollusca that are not listed in the 1798 edition, which are now listed in an appendix to this paper.

A review of the Diapheridae of the Philippines (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora: Streptaxoidea)

Authors: B. Páll-Gergely, K. Auffenberg, V. Gojšina
Basteria, 87 (2): 225-299

Abstract

While a few species of the genus Diaphera Albers, 1850 are reported in mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, southern China, northern Vietnam, Myanmar), most species occur in the Philippines. In this paper we provide photographs of all Philippine species, and mostly based on the material of the Florida Museum of Natural History, we describe elevennew species and a subspecies as follows: Diaphera costatuba Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. cyclostoma Páll- Gergely, spec. nov., D. gracilimajor Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. graciliminor Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. orca Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. princessa Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. thompsoni Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. tubella Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. vespertilio Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. neolophia Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. bacillum Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. hidalgoi skrik Páll-Gergely, subspec. nov. With this, the number of Diaphera species increases to 70, 52 of them inhabiting the Philippines. The juvenile apertural barriers are described for the first time in several species, which can be used to hypothesize about the evolutionary relationships of species and species groups within Diaphera. Biogeography of the genus is briefly discussed. The reproductive anatomy and radula morphology of four species are described. An epiphallus was found for the first time in the family Diapheridae.
