The rediscovery of Müller’s type material: resolution of the status of Buccinum zebra O.F. Müller, 1774, with additional notes on Buccinum fasciatum O.F. Müller, 1774 and Helix exilis O.F. Müller, 1774 (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Orthalicidae, Ariophantidae)

Abstract

The rediscovery in the Copenhagen museum of type material of Buccinum zebra O.F. Müller, 1774 enables us to resolve its status after more than two centuries, with the designation of a lectotype. It confirms the earlier suggestion of Rehder that this taxon is identical to Orthalicus maracaibensis L. Pfeiffer, 1856, which thus becomes a junior subjective synonym of Müller’s taxon. Zebra gruneri Strebel, 1909 is now also placed in the synonymy of Orthalicus zebra (O.F. Müller, 1774). We also provide a note on the material of Buccinum fasciatum var. α O.F. Müller, 1774, corresponding to the nominate Liguus fasciatus (O.F. Müller, 1774). Finally type material of Helix exilis O.F. Müller, 1774 was found, enabling us to iden­tify it as Ariophanta exilis (O.F. Müller, 1774), with Nanina bistrialis H. Beck, 1837 as a junior synonym (new synonymy).

Polytypic Mytilus edulis, with a name for the Baltic subspecies (Bivalvia: Mytilidae)

Abstract

The four taxa of Mytilus represented in European waters are characterized morphologically, with references to distribu­tion, nomenclature, and molecular data. The so-called Baltic M. trossulus is described as M. edulis balthicus subspec. nov. Only two Mytilus species are accepted in the area, viz. M. edulis, with M. e. edulis, M. e. galloprovincialis, and M. e. balthicus subspec. nov., and M. trossulus. To stabilize the use of M. edulis, the type locality of that taxon is restricted to the North Sea off the Dutch coast.

Abstract

A new fossil species of the genus Canariella, C. gerti, clas­sified in the subgenus Majorata Alonso & Ibáñez, 2006, is described from Quaternary eolianites from the northwest­ern part of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. Its relationships to other taxa of the family occurring on the Canary Islands and especially on Fuerteventura are discussed.

Triphoridae (Gastropoda) from the island of Saint Helena and Ascension Island, with the description of three new species

Abstract

The Triphoridae (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Triphoroidea) of the islands of Saint Helena and Ascension have not been thoroughly studied since the first records of this family were made by Edgar Albert Smith in 1890. Since then only five species of Triphora have been known from Saint Helena and since 1975 only a single species from Ascension Island. In this paper we identify three new species records for Saint Helena (Metaxia elizabethclinghamae spec. nov., Nanaphora renevanwalleghemi spec. nov. and Inella spec.) and four for Ascension Island (Cosmotriphora arnoldoi (Faber & Moolenbeek, 1991), Inella recta (E.A. Smith, 1890), Triphora albanoi spec. nov. and Triphora s.l. spec.). Three of the newly recorded species are described as new species.

Triphoridae types (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden

Abstract

The Naturalis Biodiversity Center (NBC) holds type speci­mens of 24 taxa of worldwide Triphoridae. For historical specimens (pre-World War II) the species name in its origi­nal combination is provided, followed by bibliographic details of the original description, the location of the known type material, the original description, a diagnosis, nomen­clatural notes and illustrations of the type specimens and original labels. For more recently described species infor­mation is provided on the type locality and type material. The name Triphora raoulensis is an unpublished manuscript name by T. Iredale, “co-type” specimens are deposited in the NBC and National Museum of Wales (NMW), and the name is considered unavailable.

A new species of Nitidiclavus (Neogastropoda: Drilliidae) from the Miocene Paratethys and an overview of the paleoecology and distribution of related species in the Cainozoic of Europe

Abstract

A new Paratethyan species of the middle Miocene (Serravallian) conoidean gastropod of the family Drilliidae Olsson, 1964 is described. Rare finds of Nitidiclavus senesi spec. nov. have been obtained from the marine sediments exposed in the eastern marginal part of the Vienna Basin in Slovakia (Western Carpathians). The shells were collected from the calcareous clays of the upper Badenian Studienka Formation exposed in the former clay pit of the locality Rohožník-Konopiská. Under UV light, the shell surface of some specimens had residual colour patterns, which repre­sent the first known evidence of these exceptional features for the genus Nitidiclavus. The species from Rohožník is also compared with other similar taxa from the European Cainozoic. As suggested by the sedimentology at the studied locality, N. senesi spec. nov. lived on a soft, muddy bottom in the circalittoral zone, in a habitat influenced by lowered water dynamics and occasional hypoxia. Preferred paleo­ecological conditions and geographic and stratigraphic distribution of Nitidiclavus in the North-East Atlantic and circum-Mediterranean regions are briefly discussed and summarized.
