Some notes on the genus Schileykiella Manganelli, Sparacio & Fo. Giusti, 1989 (Gastropoda, Helicoidea: Canariellidae) from Tunisia and Libya

Abstract

Building on the recent re-allocation of Helix sordulenta to the genus Schileykiella, this paper provides further insights into the taxonomy, palaeontology, and distribution of Schileykiella in North Africa. Additionally, the taxon Helix mendicaria L. Pfeiffer, 1860, described from Tunisia, is here proposed as a junior synonym of Schileykiella sordulenta (Morelet, 1851), and the taxon Xerophila chadiana darnensis Hey, 1955, described from Derna (Cyrenaica, Libya), is identified as a possible congeneric fossil species.

Abstract

The status of Acanthochitona pilosa Schmidt-Petersen, Schwabe & Haszprunar, 2015 as a distinct species is firmly confirmed by additional discriminating morphological characters and genetic analysis. Furthermore, new information has become available on its habitat, biology, and distribution range. The genetic analysis also shows the urgent need for a more comprehensive, large scale molecular phylogeny and species delimitation of European / North African Acanthochitonidae.

New northern Atlantic species of the family Fissurellidae (Gastropoda, Vetigastropoda)

Abstract

Four species of the family Fissurellidae were identified from two deep bathyal samples from the Cape Verde Islands and on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Cornisepta magna spec. nov. Is described from off Sao Nicolau, Cape Verde islands. Cornisepta microphyma, Profundisepta bipolar spec. nov. and an undescribed species of the genus Fissurisepta were found on the Mid Atlantic Ridge.

Abstract

Calliostoma cancapae sp. nov. is described from the Cape Verde Islands. Empty shells of the new species were collected from 41 sites in the depth range 35-3250 m during the CANCAP-vi (1982) and CANCAP-vii (1986) expeditions.

Hidden diversity in cockles: six new Indo-Pacific species and a new subfamily with notes on the Vasticardium elongatum species group (Bivalvia: Cardiidae)

Abstract

Six new Indo-Pacific Cardiidae species are described originating from various institutional collections, supplemented with material from private collections, mostly based on shell characters and partly augmented by genetic information: Microcardium lukasi spec. nov., Microcardium roelofi spec. nov., Ctenocardia lisae spec. nov., Acrosterigma zamboangaense spec. nov., Vasticardium jorgeni spec. nov. and Vasticardium albopacificum spec. nov. A new subfamily Nemocardiinae subfam. nov. is proposed for the genera Nemocardium Meek, 1876; Pratulum Iredale, 1924; Keenaea Habe, 1951; Lophocardium P. Fischer, 1887; Frigidocardium Habe, 1951 and Microcardium Keen, 1937. In addition it comprises the extinct genera Anechinocardium Hickman, 2015 and Arctopratulum Keen, 1954. Some notes are given on the composition and geographic distribution of the Vasticardium elongatum group of species. Acrosterigma elongatum cipangense J. Vidal, 1993 is considered a junior synonym of Trachycardium (Acrosterigma) serricostatum okinawaense Kuroda, 1960 and Vasticardium kuboderai Thach, 2015 a junior synonym of Vasticardium berschaueri Thach, 2014.

A review of the Diapheridae of the Philippines (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora: Streptaxoidea)

Abstract

While a few species of the genus Diaphera Albers, 1850 are reported in mainland Southeast Asia (Thailand, southern China, northern Vietnam, Myanmar), most species occur in the Philippines. In this paper we provide photographs of all Philippine species, and mostly based on the material of the Florida Museum of Natural History, we describe elevennew species and a subspecies as follows: Diaphera costatuba Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. cyclostoma Páll- Gergely, spec. nov., D. gracilimajor Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. graciliminor Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. orca Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. princessa Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. thompsoni Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. tubella Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. vespertilio Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. neolophia Páll-Gergely, spec. nov., D. bacillum Páll-Gergely & Auffenberg, spec. nov., D. hidalgoi skrik Páll-Gergely, subspec. nov. With this, the number of Diaphera species increases to 70, 52 of them inhabiting the Philippines. The juvenile apertural barriers are described for the first time in several species, which can be used to hypothesize about the evolutionary relationships of species and species groups within Diaphera. Biogeography of the genus is briefly discussed. The reproductive anatomy and radula morphology of four species are described. An epiphallus was found for the first time in the family Diapheridae.

Acestarica, a new genus for a translucent deep-water species (Bivalvia, Limidae)

Abstract

In 2015, a very thin-shelled, translucent bivalve in the fam­ily Limidae Rafinesque, 1815 was described as Acesta vitrina Poppe, Tagaro & Stahlschmidt, 2015 and coming from deep water from the Philippines. A new genus is proposed to accommodate this species based on its unique shellchar­acters: an oblique, rounded shape, very translucent, thin-walled shell of small to moderate size. Comments are made on the subgenera of Acesta H. Adams & A. Adams, 1858.

Nassarius siquijorensis (A. Adams, 1852) and N. crenelliferus (A. Adams, 1852), two similar and often misidentified species (Gastropoda: Nassariidae)

Abstract

In 1984 W.O. Cernohorsky reviewed the Indo-West Pacific species of Nassariidae. He revised Nassarius siquijorensis (A. Adams, 1852) and among the many synonyms listed were N. crenelliferus (A. Adams, 1852) and N. cingendus (Marrat, 1880). In this paper N. crenelliferus is considered to be a valid species and N. cingendus a synonym of this species, not a synonym of N. siquijorensis. Nassarius siquijorensis remains a valid species and its type location is designated.

Triphoridae types (Mollusca, Gastropoda) in Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden

Abstract

The Naturalis Biodiversity Center (NBC) holds type speci­mens of 24 taxa of worldwide Triphoridae. For historical specimens (pre-World War II) the species name in its origi­nal combination is provided, followed by bibliographic details of the original description, the location of the known type material, the original description, a diagnosis, nomen­clatural notes and illustrations of the type specimens and original labels. For more recently described species infor­mation is provided on the type locality and type material. The name Triphora raoulensis is an unpublished manuscript name by T. Iredale, “co-type” specimens are deposited in the NBC and National Museum of Wales (NMW), and the name is considered unavailable.

Sinum haliotoideum (Linnaeus, 1758): historic and modern records from the Red Sea, with a discussion of its convoluted taxonomic history (Gastropoda, Naticidae)

Abstract

Specimens of Sinum haliotoideum (Linnaeus, 1758) were recently collected in the Red Sea area, confirming an old report from the mid-1800s. The occurrence in the Red Sea is supported by records, both earlier and recent, from neighbouring localities in the northern Indian Ocean. Thus, the northern Indian Ocean, including the Red Sea, has to be included in the geographical range of this spe­cies. Differences in opinion concerning conspecificity of Sinum haliotoideum with other species of Sinum described from the Indo-Pacific are discussed. S. planulatum (Récluz in Chenu, 1843) = S. planatum (Récluz in Chenu, 1843), S. planum (Philippi, 1844), S. gualterianum (Récluz, 1851), and S. weberi (Bartsch, 1918) are all junior synonyms of S. hali­otoideum (Linnaeus, 1758). S. fuscum (Röding, 1798), S. sin­uatum (Récluz, 1851), S. lacteum (Récluz, 1851), Ectosinum pauloconvexum Iredale, 1931, and S. diauges Kilburn, 1974 are distinct from S. haliotoideum. The status of S. indicum (Gray, 1828) remains uncertain as the type material is prob­ably lost.

Notes on Drymaeus species from Peru (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Bulimulidae), and description of a new species

Abstract

Critical remarks are made on Drymaeus species, reported from Peru in a study on land snails from National Parks at the eastern side of the Andes. Four of these species (Dry­maeus multilineatus, D. coniformis, D. glaucostomus, all known from Venezuela or Central America, and D. geomet­ricus, known from Colombia) appear to be misidentified as Peruvian species, which thus may lead to incorrect biogeo­graphical interpretations. Correct identifications are given for all the disputed Drymaeus species. Bulimulus (Bulimu­lus) inconspicuus F. Haas, 1949, is now transferred to Dry­maeus (Mesembrinus). Additionaly, a new species, Drymae­us (Drymaeus) verecundus Breure & Mogollón, is described.

Revision of the systematic position of Lindbergia garganoensis Gittenberger & Eikenboom, 2006, with reassignment to Vitrea Fitzinger, 1833 (Gastropoda, Eupulmonata, Pristilomatidae)

Abstract

Lindbergia garganoensis Gittenberger & Eikenboom, 2006, a taxon with mainly a south-Balkan distribution, is the only Italian species assigned to the genus Lindbergia Riedel, 1959. The assignment to this genus, as documented by the pecu­liar spiral microsculpture of the teleoconch, has never been confirmed by anatomical data. Because this species was only known conchologically, a correct, anatomically-based generic classification within the Pristilomatidae was not possible. Due to the availability of some living specimens, the genitalia could be studied and Lindbergia garganoensis assigned its correct placement within the Pristilomatidae. The species is now classified into the genus Vitrea Fitzinger, 1833 because of the following diagnostic characters: absence of an epiphallus, presence of a sarcobelum inside the penis, presence of a vaginal gland and a very small bursa copula­trix.

The limited range of Albinaria latelamellaris in southwestern Turkey with the description of a new subspecies (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Clausiliidae)

Abstract

The range of Albinaria latelamellaris Neubert, 2000 has been found to cover an area only about 10 hectares around its type locality in southwestern Turkey. A new subspe­cies, Albinaria latelamellaris kekovensis subspec. nov., is described from a disjunct population about 9 km away in the coastal Kekova region. The shells of the new subspecies differ from those of the nominal subspecies in their smaller dimensions and denser ribbing.
