Abstract

The Cardiidae collected during the MADIBENTHOS [2016], KARUBENTHOS 2012, KARUBENTHOS 2015 and GUAYNE 2014 Laevicardium species (L. mortoni, L. sybariticum, L. pictum, L. fiski and L. brasilianum). These are herein described as new species: L. caribbaeum spec. nov., L. solidum spec. nov. and L. globotriangulare spec. nov. The latter is an extra-limital tropical western Atlantic species, not found by the current expeditions. Laevicardium pictum is considered as a more northern taxon, largely overlapping that of the Carolinian Subprovince. A new genus, Pseudopapyridea is introduced for Cardium semisulcatum and the fossil C. ponteleviense, both previously placed in Papyridea. A lectotype is designated for C. antillarum A. d’Orbigny, 1853. The first western Atlantic record of the potentially invasive species Fulvia fragilis is documented and discussed, with Fulvia fragilis congoensis von Cosel, 1995 recognized as a new synonym.

Hidden diversity in cockles: six new Indo-Pacific species and a new subfamily with notes on the Vasticardium elongatum species group (Bivalvia: Cardiidae)

Author: Jan Johan ter Poorten
Basteria, 87 (2): 169-205

Abstract

Six new Indo-Pacific Cardiidae species are described originating from various institutional collections, supplemented with material from private collections, mostly based on shell characters and partly augmented by genetic information: Microcardium lukasi spec. nov., Microcardium roelofi spec. nov., Ctenocardia lisae spec. nov., Acrosterigma zamboangaense spec. nov., Vasticardium jorgeni spec. nov. and Vasticardium albopacificum spec. nov. A new subfamily Nemocardiinae subfam. nov. is proposed for the genera Nemocardium Meek, 1876; Pratulum Iredale, 1924; Keenaea Habe, 1951; Lophocardium P. Fischer, 1887; Frigidocardium Habe, 1951 and Microcardium Keen, 1937. In addition it comprises the extinct genera Anechinocardium Hickman, 2015 and Arctopratulum Keen, 1954. Some notes are given on the composition and geographic distribution of the Vasticardium elongatum group of species. Acrosterigma elongatum cipangense J. Vidal, 1993 is considered a junior synonym of Trachycardium (Acrosterigma) serricostatum okinawaense Kuroda, 1960 and Vasticardium kuboderai Thach, 2015 a junior synonym of Vasticardium berschaueri Thach, 2014.

Papyridea clenchi spec. nov. and Papyridea curvicostata spec. nov., two new Paper Cockles from tropical America (Bivalvia, Cardiidae), with notes on evolution and dispersal

Author: Jan Johan ter Poorten
Basteria, 83 (4/6): 109-130

Abstract

Papyridea clenchi spec. nov. (Cardiidae) is described from Martinique and compared with the related Papyridea lata (Born, 1778), Papyridea soleniformis (Bruguière, 1789) and Papyridea semisulcata (Gray, 1825). Papyridea curvicostata spec. nov. is described from Ecuador and compared with the related Papyridea hiulca (Reeve, 1845), Papyridea crockeri (A.M. Strong & Hertlein, 1937) and Papyridea aspersa(G.B. Sowerby i, 1833). Taxonomic relations within the four tropical Atlantic and four tropical eastern Pacific species are analyzed. Distributions of the living species are given. Atlantic-Pacific geminate species pairs are discussed; a predominantly one-way migration (from Atlantic to Pacific) through the Isthmus of Panama is hypothesized. The fossil record of Papyridea is reviewed and the taxonomic position of Profulvia is discussed.

Basteria, 83 (1/3): 41-51

Abstract

Americardia lindamaesae spec. nov. (Cardiidae) is described from Ascension Island, based on new collections. It is compared with the related Americardia media (Linnaeus, 1758), A. lightbourni Lee & Huber, 2012, A. columbella Lee & Huber, 2012 and A. speciosa (A. Adams & Reeve, 1850).
