Abstract

Acesta forteradiata spec. nov. is described from off Saint Helena, SE Atlantic Ocean. The species was recognised by José Romeo Stuardo in his doctoral thesis on Limidae and named Acesta sanctaehelenae Stuardo, 1968. However, this name is a nomen nudum because Stuardo did not describe the species and his thesis was not published following the ICZN rules. Acesta forteradiata spec. nov. is characterised by an external sculpture of coarse radial riblets covering the full valves and plicating the relatively thin shell, a peaked umbo, and weakly inflated valves. All type specimens are kept in the Natural History Museum Denmark in Copenhagen.

Abstract

In 2015, a very thin-shelled, translucent bivalve in the family Limidae Rafinesque, 1815 was described as Acesta vitrina Poppe, Tagaro & Stahlschmidt, 2015 and coming from deep water from the Philippines. A new genus is proposed to accommodate this species based on its unique shell characters: an oblique, rounded shape, very translucent, thin-walled shell of small to moderate size. Comments are made on the subgenera of Acesta H. Adams & A. Adams, 1858.
